We're seeking an experienced technical / documentation writer to help our users learn about, reference, and master our product.
This is a part-time / contract role (remote-friendly) with the potential to grow to full-time as our company grows.
First, a bit of background...
We're a VC-funded startup, founded in 2011 by former Google engineers with a deep background in technical operations. Our founder Steve Newman (one of the creators of Google Docs) was frustrated by the sheer number of tools required to get his job done managing infrastructure at Google (17 different tools at one point!). Scalyr was created to solve that problem.
Over the past few years, our small team has developed a powerful tool for DevOps teams. It's lightning-fast, feature-rich, and our customers - primarily engineers - love it (and pay for it.)
Our documentation to date has been written by our senior engineering team. We're quite proud of their work - it's rich and comprehensive:

This work, of course, takes considerable time, and we're now at the stage where that time needs to be spent on engineering. This is where you and your writing skills come in.
This job is not about reading engineering specs and translating them into dry documentation. It is about using our product, really grokking it, and putting that understanding into words. We want our documentation to be friendly, approachable, and thorough. It should both:
Introduce new users to the product, and
Provide a comprehensive reference for power users.
Ideally, the role will work as follows: You'll be an active, regular user of the product. You'll get it. As features change, you'll re-write existing documentation to keep it up to date. As features are added, you'll write new documentation. You'll also write solution guides, FAQs, and example use-cases.
Be independent, but be comfortable collaborating with our engineering & product teams.
Feel open to ask questions, offer suggestions, and become a power user of our product.
Be able to show us examples of your past work of a similar scope/scale. Ideally, you've written technical documentation for an engineer-oriented software product.
You'll be working with our entire engineering & product team. We're a small, intimate team of ~10. We're a highly technical and cerebral group. We listen to each other, value both affirming and dissenting opinions, have healthy debates (with no bruised egos), and love talking about our product, engineering, and everything else (from world politics to TV to science fiction novels.) We range in age from 20s to 50s.
