Overview:

As a member of the Instructional Design and Delivery team, the Copyeditor's primary responsibilities are to contribute his or her professional proofreading and editorial expertise to multiple custom curriculum projects for internal and external clients. This position requires an individual with experience working on a team, ideally in higher education/academic course development, with a commitment to quality writing, a passion for the learner, and the communication skills to work with individuals at many different levels in the Cengage and customer organizations. As a member of this high-functioning team, it is critically important for a Copyeditor to work successfully with other remote team members.

Responsibilities:

- Read, evaluate, and edit text thoroughly for correct grammar (including spelling and punctuation), syntax, usage, style, and consistency, for internal and external projects, at all stages of development and/or production; tasks may include providing queries/feedback regarding style/formatting issues, coordinating with other team members to ensure content accuracy and consistency in all project documentation
- Author or contribute to style guides and/or editorial training materials
- Attend project meetings, provide editorial status updates, and maintain organized and accurate records and logs as assigned
- Consistently follow established best practices and contribute to the development of new workflow processes
- Perform editorial/instructional design quality assurance testing for online courses and other content
- Train others to perform editorial/instructional design quality assurance testing for online courses and other content
- Perform other duties as assigned, e.g., pitch in on instructional design and development efforts as required

Qualifications:

Basic (Required)

- Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or other related discipline or work experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree
- At least three years of copyediting experience
- Exceptional professional verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with managing several projects at once with little to no oversight
- One or more years' successful experience working remotely/virtually
- Strong knowledge of how to apply and/or interpret information in print or online references (e.g., APA, The Chicago Manual of Style, The Gregg Reference Manual, Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, etc.)
- Expert user of word processing and professional office applications including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Professional

Preferred

- Experience with project leadership, resource allocation, training/mentoring, coordinating deadlines with multiple work groups, and maintaining communication required to meet objectives
- Two years' experience in educational copyediting
- Knowledge and understanding of assessment writing, Bloom's taxonomy, and other instructional design theories and tenets
- Solid understanding of the use of HTML and XML in web publishing
- Experience working in major learning management systems
