The Director of Financial Services is responsible for providing consistent leadership and will assume a strategic role in the overall management of the organization. He/she is also responsible for focusing on fiscal responsibility, maintaining accurate and timely financial reporting, ensuring acceptable levels of internal control, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, and safeguarding assets. This is a full time exempt position and reports to the Executive Director. This position is primarily located in the Carmel Office with some days on property in Big Sur.

What will this role do?

- Collaborate with the executive leadership team to develop effective long-range, strategic plans for financial sustainability and mission impact
- Evaluate business opportunities to support Esalen's continuous growth initiatives
- Partner with Marketing, Programming and Guest Services to develop effective pricing, marketing and yield management strategies
- Represent the organization to financial partners, including financial institutions, donors, foundations, auditors, and board members
- Hire, train, supervise, motivate and develop staff. Foster positive working relationships; maintain a continuous growth environment; and promote maximum morale and productivity
- Oversee preparation of the monthly financial reporting package including balance sheet, cash flow, income statement, fixed assets, restricted funds and other meaningful financial metrics
- Oversee annual independent audit and tax return
- Lead the annual budgeting process, investigate and critique variances to budget or to prior year and offer practical improvement methodologies to management
- Analyze financial data and operations in order to assist and advise management in maintaining Esalen's financial objectives including but not limited to cash flow and income forecasts
- Ensure legal and regulatory compliance, adequate internal controls and safeguarding of assets
- Ensure adequate insurance packages including liability, property, fidelity, and renewals annually
- Monitor the capital planning process by assisting management with the calculation of return on capital improvements, monitoring the bid process, and budget to actual reporting
- Ensure Esalen's compliance on all regulatory licenses and permits, leases, contracts, legal agreements. Provide assistance to management in enforcing compliance on all these items
- Ensure that all balance sheet accounts, including bank reconciliation's are reconciled on a timely basis
- Participate in M.O.D. coverage as required

Qualifications & Requirements

- The right person for this role will have an accounting degree, with 10+ years of progressively responsible financial experience, of which at least 5 years is at a controller or higher level in a similar sized organization. Hospitality and/or non-profit experience are highly preferred.

Physical Requirements

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to maneuver on uneven ground, sit for long periods of time, occasionally carry and lift up to 25 pounds, and be able perform daily repetitive hand motions as it pertains to computer mouse and keyboard.
