Developer Cloud DevOps Lead Engineer

Location: Cambridge, United Kingdom; Worldwide for the right candidate

The Linaro Enterprise Group (LEG) was established in November 2012 as the first segment focused group within Linaro. The group was established to accelerate Linux ARM server ecosystem development and it extended the list of Linaro members beyond ARM silicon vendors to Server OEM's and commercial Linux providers.

This joint collaboration focuses on identifying and addressing gaps/optimizations in the ARM Linux server software ecosystem, enabling SoC support upstream to meet LEG requirements, agreeing LEG requirements for SoC software standardization and upstreaming all relevant output.

The LEG steering committee defines the high level tasks - be it heavy lifting "mighty" projects or quick "low hanging fruit" optimizations - and the corresponding priorities and timelines as "cards". The technical leaders in the engineering team then analyze each card and break it into multiple smaller and more detailed tasks.

After the first years focused on the foundation technologies to enable server workloads, we are currently investing in OpenStack and Software Defined Infrastructure (SDI), leveraging the ARM architecture. We are seeking a candidate to help deliver this highly technical effort.

The candidate shall be experienced in deployment and orchestration of OpenStack and SDI, with deep understanding of devops tooling, such as Heat, Ironic, Kolla and Ansible. Central to the role, will be the automated deployment and day to day operations of an AArch64 based OpenStack cloud and the coordination with development teams to make all the functionality available and reliable. Triaging issues, root causing problems and reporting them in a detailed and comprehensive way for effective fixing is essential to the success of this candidate. In addition, the candidate should have knowledge of containers, such as Docker, Kubernetes and others and how this applies within both the infrastructure layer, as well as container workloads. Collaboration with several teams within Linaro will be required so this person has to be comfortable talking to other teams and coordinating cross-team efforts.

The right candidate shall be able to lead a team of DevOps engineers and coordinate efforts across time zones as well as hands on experience to get the effort started from scratch.

Performance and stability of OpenStack with the ARM architecture is key for this role, triaging issues and being able to raise bugs for the engineering teams to fix is a must. The ultimate goals are to identify shortcomings in functionality and performance bottlenecks for optimization as well as competitive advantage from the ARM server scale-out architecture vs more traditional scale-up approaches.

The desired individual is someone who will bring knowledge and creativity to the position, have the discipline to drive improvements of established fundamental engineering processes as well as identifying gaps and filling them with the right automated processes. The candidate will join a distributed team of highly skilled engineers in addition to his/her technical tasks.

Travel: International travel is required for approximately 1 week duration up to 3-4 times per year to attend Linaro Connect events as well as engineering sprints or public conferences. In addition, this person may be required to travel to different locations to help members bring up new clouds up to 3 times a year.
