Title: Legal Counsel
Date Posted: 2018-01-08
Location: San Francisco, CA
There's a voter registration crisis looming, and Vote.org intends to take aggressive action to prevent it. The rate of Driver's License acquisition by 18 year olds has been plummeting for decades. It's currently 50% and with ride sharing, increased urban density, and autonomous vehicles we can expect to see it decline further in the future. Just one problem, to register to vote online you need a Driver's License and you can't sign your voter registration card electronically.

If the idea of going on offense for voting rights sounds exciting to you and you've got a political organizer's mindset as well as a Juris Doctorate, then this might just be the role for you!

Who we are:

- Vote.org is a YC-backed non-profit that uses technology to simplify political engagement, increase voter turnout, and strengthen American democracy. And this isn't just talk: the only groups that reached more voters than we did in 2016 were the presidential campaigns themselves. In 2017 we ran the largest nonpartisan programs in Virginia and Alabama.
- In 2018 we'll run a massive GOTV program to turnout the 10 million first time voters from 2016 and attempt to create a habit that'll pay dividends for decades. We'll also be pushing companies in every industry to give their employees Election Day off.
- Since 2016 we helped over 3.3 million people register to vote, check their registration status, or get their absentee ballots; we ran the single largest Election Day GOTV drive in 2016; we pioneered the use of electronic signatures on voting forms; we served over 7.6 million visitors to our primary domain; we ran five of the largest controlled experiments in US voting history in 2016 with several groundbreaking experiments pending from 2017; and LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Stephen Curry made a PSA about us. Obama and Ellen have tweeted about us. Also, if you ask Siri how to vote, she'll send you to Vote.org.
- We're ambitious, efficient, metric-driven, passionate, low-ego, and fun to work with.

You describe yourself as someone who:

- Loves the idea of working at a highly effective, mission-driven nonprofit organization
- Is comfortable working remotely since we're an all-remote team
- Wants to use your law degree to help expand democracy in the United States
- Communicates pragmatic solutions clearly
- Is comfortable with hard deadlines because election deadlines are non-negotiable
- Asks questions, seeks answers, and is constantly working towards the mission of Vote.org

The general scope of work (essential functions):

- Work closely with Vote.org leadership to develop and implement a comprehensive legal strategy that will expand opportunities for voter registration and participation in elections at the local, state, and federal levels.
- Lead, coordinate, and manage the legal services provided to Vote.org; help select and effectively supervise outside legal counsel; supervise implementation of legal strategy and any deliverables to Vote.org.
- Provide legal advice to project/program staff on legal issues relating to voter registration and other non-profit activities.
- Work closely with other Vote.org staff and contractors to pursue some legal problems through an aggressive communications and PR strategy.
- Manage Vote.org legal affairs and provide advice and counsel as to how Vote.org can best fulfill its mission while protecting the organization from adverse legal consequences.

- Provide information on relevant changes in law.

You'll bring the following skills and experience to Vote.org:

- Juris Doctor.
- Minimum 5-7 years of legal experience; prior experience in nonprofit or political law and/or familiarity with voter registration laws preferred but not required.
- Ability to research and draft quality legal documents quickly to respond promptly and helpfully to the needs and legal questions of Vote.org staff and outside counsel (election environments can be fast paced).
- You'll need to be a strategic thinker who can think innovatively and creatively about the law in order to design a long-term legal strategy that will increase voter registration and participation nationwide. These battles might be more easily fought and won in the court of public opinion than in a courtroom. We call this the "organizer's mindset."

- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
- Ability to break down complex legal speak into something the rest of the team can understand.

We pay a competitive salary based on a combination of your experience and your location. We promise you'll be comfortably middle class, but you probably won't strike it rich working to improve US democracy.
