Are you harnessing the power of Twitter?

12 November 2009 2 Comments

A few months back I made a post on another website about the power of Twitter and other social networks like Facebook when it comes to connecting with employers and people who may have the inside track on vacant jobs. This morning as I was browsing trough a few of the news websites I visit on a daily basis, something caught my eye. At the very top of the page of one of the most popular news sites in Canada, there was a “Breaking News” . That’s nothing new or unexpected, however what really caught my attention was the fact that the news source was Twitter!

Take a look (I took a snap of the page)…

Only after posting the pic above did I notice that it was a bit blurry, but I’m sure you can still see what I saw. Twitter is so powerful now, we’re sourcing our news from there?

Do you use Twitter, Facebook or any other form of social media? Are you connecting with people within your profession, niche or with similar traits? Maybe it’s time you did. The amount of information that’s shared on these forums daily is incredible and it’s very simple to use.

My 5 tips for using Twitter effectively are:

Follow people with similar interests

Get into the conversation and contribute

Don’t spam

Help other people out

Create relationships

follow chris de la rosa on twitter

The beauty of all these social networking sites is that they’re free and very simple to get started.

I thought about getting into Twitter, but didn’t really have a motivation to do so. I might rethink my stance after reading your article, as well as listening to a few people talking about their experiences with it. Currently I am located in China, where it is blocked, along with Facebook and a host of others. People here use proxies to get around things like this, so I might just proxy my way to Twitter for a peek. ;)

Robert thanks for taking the time to share your comment. Being in China may have it’s limits as far as access goes. I guess we take our freedom for granted sometimes here in North America.

    Good luck
