Can you really work from home in your underwear?

11 January 2010 2 Comments

I’m sure you can if you really wanted to, but I guarantee you that it will affect your productivity and time management. I’m sure you’ve come across the ads in your email or online that promote their money making product by saying that it’s so easy that you can do it from home in your underwear. I’ve now been working from home for over 10 years and I’ve never once worked in my underwear (I did try it without success).

There are times when we go on vacation I may be in my swimming shorts as I quickly check my emails and there were times when I would sit on the deck of the pool at my sister’s place and get a couple hours work completed early in the morning, but I’ve found over the years that you must “dress the part”.

Here’s a pic of the pool (with 32C temps, beautiful sunny tropical weather and peace and quiet in the mornings, it’s a great spot to enjoy a coffee and do a couple hrs of work)…

After starting my work from home career I soon discovered that I had to approach it as a real 9-5 “job”, which meant that I had to set and stick to a schedule. This means getting up on time, and going through the routine (shower, shave, get dressed) as if I were heading out to a job at an office. You really have to train yourself to approach things professionally and not get distracted by the fact that you’re home with no supervision and can do what you want, when you want.

There are many things I’d prefer to be doing rather than working in front of this computer, but this is what helps pay the bills so it’s something I always have in the back of my head.

Don’t get me wrong, I have tried working in my underwear pyjamas, but with the relaxed approach my daily productivity suffered. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind and I was easily distracted into just surfing the Internet or head off into the living room and watching the boob tube.

Working from home does mean that you have some level of freedom, but it all depends on how productive you can be in the less time possible. In an upcoming post we’ll chat a bit about automation to free up your time.

Have you tried working from home in your underwear? Leave me your comments below.

Make it a great day

I totally see your point about having to “dress the part.” However, I work best when I am comfortable and how much more comfortable can you get than your pajamas??!! My 5 girls and I go shopping and they always ask, “Hey, mom, do you need some more work clothes?” while holding up a cute pajama bottom. I have worked from home for over 10 years and I do think most people would be more productive going through the “normal” routine of showering, shaving (or in my case, putting on make-up) and dressing for work. It takes a lot of self discipline to work at home unsupervised. Heck, maybe I would be a little more productive if I showered and prettied up in the morning! Maybe I’ll try it but, if I change my attire, it will be to sweats and a tee!

Tabatha, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts/experience. BTW, love the comment your girls make when you go shopping. I’ve also found that being comfortable is one of the key ingredients to being successful at working from home. For me, it’s jeans and a t-shirt and shorts in the summer.

    All the best.
