How do you prepare for “working” while on the road?

21 September 2009 No Comment

Within the next few days I’ll have to get myself organized to travel for a couple weeks. This means preparing myself for work while traveling, since I plan on taking full advantage of this work from home gig. I work from home, so there’s no reason why I can’t work from someone elses home. After-all we’ll be staying at my sister’s place and not only does she have 100% uptime wireless connection (faster speed than what I work with currently), her fiance said it was ok to work on his massive Mac computer. Can’t wait to take that baby for a ride!

So what do you pack when you don’t want to take your laptop with you? In a previous post I mentioned that I was in the process of making a copy of all my bookmarks onto a usb memory stick, and today I created a small file with all the passwords and user names I have for all my online accounts. I have a neat tool here that automatically stores my login info for membership sites I belong to, but since I’ll be using a different computer I’ll have a hard time trying to remember them all.

The next step is to compile a “tasks” list to take with me. A simple text file (or it can be more elaborate excel file) with all that I hope to accomplish while I’m gone and a reminder of what I do on a normal day. It’s very easy to forget to do simple daily tasks when you’re caught up in the excitement of travel/vacation.

I also make a list on a notebook of things I need to pack, like.. note pads, pens, camera (to take pics for blogging) battery charger, extra memory cards, memory card reader and anything else I use on an everyday basis.

Do you plan on taking your job on the road? How do your prepare yourself and what do you pack?

Have a great day everyone.

Chris…

p.s. Not only am I storing all this info onto a usb memory stick, I’ll also print a hard copy of the files just incase the stick gets lost or does not work. You can never be too sure!
