Why it’s important to set rules for your employees who telecommute.

telecommuting rules for employees to followIf you’re an employer who’s considering allowing your employees to work on a flex time schedule where part of their work week is spent working form home, there are rules you must have in place from the onset. I’ve been working from home for the past 11 years, but looking back I realize that my first telecommute job didn’t come with any rules. I could have done what I want, when I want.. even with the company’s equipment. Maybe it’s because of the relationship I had with that employer, where he was convinced that I would not only get my work done, but I would not jeopardize the company’s equipment or reputation while I was under no real supervision. (they had no idea what websites I was visiting or exactly what i was doing with their laptop).

I still work from home, but now it’s for myself. However I do have assistants who from from home and we do have an understanding as far as what they do and what’s expected from them. Especially when it comes critical information.

Here’s a great article I’d suggest employers  read before allowing their staff to telework.. Telecommuting & Data Protection.
